Golden Age Superman Comic Book Index
Superman Index (June 1938 to September-November 1940):
This
index features the original Golden Age/"Earth-2" Superman, and his
supporting characters. It's scope runs from Action Comics #1 (1938; the
first appearance of Superman) to Crisis on Infinite Earths and The
Last Days of the Justice Society of America Special (1986). Crisis on
Infinite Earths effected the "DC Multiverse" retroactively and
crossed over into almost all of DC's titles in 1985-1986, so it's impact is seen
first on the issues of All-Star Squadron which take place circa 1942 and
then finally at the end of this index circa 1986.
Notes on "Pre-Crisis" DC Universe. (See especially if confused over "Earth-2"/"Earth-1" references.)
Action Comics
#1 (June 1938)
Cover Notes:
First Superman cover (next Superman cover is
Action Comics #7)
First Story--Title: "Superman, Champion of the Oppressed!" (Title not printed in story)
Characters:
Superman (Clark Kent; Kryptonian
birth name later revealed to be Kal-L; 1st appearance; this is the character who
will later be referred to as the "Earth-2" Superman, and is the
version of Superman appearing until roughly 1954 (the Earth-1 "Superboy"
first appears much earlier in 1945), as are all of the other characters in his
stories "Earth-2" versions unless otherwise noted; origin is revealed
in brief one-page sequence; gets job as reporter at the Daily Star newspaper in
this story; this story is reprinted and expanded on in the first story in Superman
(vol. 1) #1, so Superman chronologically appears prior to this in the first
half (origin sequence) of that story; appears next in the Superman story in Action
Comics #2)
Lois Lane (1st appearance; works as a romance/advice columnist for the Daily Star; makes appearance chronologically previous to this in expanded story in
Superman (vol. 1) #1; appears next in the Superman story in Action Comics #2)
George Taylor
(1st appearance; remains unnamed (referred to only as "editor" and "chief") until he is named in the second story in
Superman (vol. 1) #2 (see Story Notes for that entry); editor of the Daily Star newspaper (precursor of the later Perry White character); makes appearance chronologically previous to this in expanded story in
Superman (vol. 1) #1; appears next in the Superman story in Action Comics #2)
John and Mary Kent
(first appearance of both, behind the scenes in origin sequence; the two make an actual cameo appearance in the expanded origin sequence in
Superman (vol. 2) #1; Earth-2 precursors of later (Earth-1) Jonathan and Martha Kent characters; John Kent is
referred to as "Silas Kent" in
Action Comics #132 (May 1949); while John Kent begins going by Jonathan in
Action Comics #158 (July 1951) and Mary is renamed Martha as of Superman (vol. 1) #74 (January-February 1952), the Earth-1 Superman stories do not begin until
Superman #90 (March 1954) and Action Comics #196 (September 1954), causing one of the many inconsistencies when attributing stories to Earth-1 and
Earth-2 (the Earth-1 Superman first appears as "Superboy" many years
earlier in More Fun Comics #101 (January-February 1945))
Story Notes:
None of the familiar place names are established yet in this story or the brief origin sequence (Krypton, Smallville, or Metropolis). The story was originally
formatted as a newspaper comic strip. The first half of the story had to be cut to fit this issue's page count. The story is reprinted (in it's entirety) in
Superman (vol. 1) #1; story continues next issue.
Reprinted In: Superman

Thirties to the Seventies (1971, reprints Superman (vol. 1) #1

(vol. 1) #1 version), Superman Archives Volume One (1989, reprints Superman
(vol. 1) #1 version) Superman: The Action Comics Archives Volume One
(1997, reprints original Action Comics #1 version)
Costume Notes: The chest "S" emblem is colored yellow throughout story; Superman's red boots are not present (his feet appear to be covered by his blue leggings), and they don't make their first appearance until the Superman stories in
Action Comics #5 and #6 as reprinted in Superman (vol. 1) #3 (it is unknown if they actually appeared red in the original printings or if they were recolored red when reprinted in
Superman (vol. 1) #3; Superman's boots are then colored yellow throughout his story in
Action Comics #7, and his red boots make their first definitive regular appearance in the Superman story in
Action Comics #8; the yellow "S" emblem has not yet appeared the back of the cape; it does not make it's first appearance until the Superman story in
Action Comics #13

Story Notes:
The reference to the newspaper Clark Kent and his companions work at as being the Evening News and as originating in Cleveland, Ohio can be explained by the fact that Siegel and Shuster had not settled on the specifics yet; the references are assumed to be incorrect and should be read as the Daily Star and Metropolis, New York)
