Was playing with webcam. Added some of the images to site (one of me--sans glasses since I'm wearing contacts again more often now--and several of Trooper [Trooper: 2 years old (webcam images)]).

Went into the HTML and replaced all of the GeoCities URL addresses ("http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/8939/" stuff) with the new www.youngtrek.com domain address. Like I said, the old address will still work, redirecting visitors to the new domain, but I figured that it’d be good to go ahead and get all the internal links switched over anyway.

I made a pretty big change this weekend. I upgraded to my own domain name: www.youngtrek.com. It means I'm paying a bit for it (which is of course a downside) but has several upsides. 1) More space to work with (although, granted, I hadn't come close to using up all of the space that the free GeoCities site gave me). 2) A significantly higher Data Transfer Limit. So, hopefully, people won't be hitting that, "This site has exceeded its Data Transfer Limit, please try again at another time" error message page when trying to look at all of the stuff on my site (particularly the pictures which was what was causing folks to hit that Data Transfer Limit the most). 3) No more of the annoying pop-up advertising windows to close! 4) An less cumbersome internet address. www.youngtrek.com is a lot easer to remember than http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/8939/index.html was! (I didn't even have that one memorized.) And 5) I hopefully won't have to worry about email messages that I send to people with AOL email accounts having those messages bounce back to me because of AOL's deciding to reject all incoming email messages with GeoCities URL (internet addresses) in the text of the message. I had to stop putting my own homepage URL in my email sig because I was having the email messages bounce back to me from AOL address. Needless to say, that was pretty frustrating.

I had some trouble when I first set up my new domain address at www.youngtrek.com the weekend of Sunday, October 23 (which is why I'm actually reposting this entry on Thursday, November 3). My pages transferred fine from my free GeoCities site to the new domain but it wouldn't keep anything I edited for some reason. It'd seem to save changes but then I'd go back later in the day and the changes would no longer be there. Needless to say that I didn't want to do too many in-depth changes or additions until after this problem had been resolved. It appears that Yahoo has fixed it now (or, at least I hope so!).

My old web address at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/8939/index.html is still active but now merely as a redirect to the new www.youngtrek.com site. (If you have the old address in your favorites/bookmarks you might want to switch to the new one.)

Oh, and all of my counters reverted back to zero upon the change. Sigh. Oh well. I guess I can live with that. New web address, new start... :)

(P.S.: I had been playing with the idea of a "www.youngtrek.com" web address for a while so when I finally decided to take the plunge I instinctively chose that one. In hindsight, however, I'm starting to think that "www.youngtrek.net" would have been more appropriate since this is really just my own personal web space to play around with and there's nothing "commercial" (.com) about it. Oh well, I've paid for it now so I guess www.youngtrek.com is it!)

Added several more pictures pages. See bottom of homepage for links. (Trooper turned two years old on April 1st!!) :)

Changed the "Comics Read Blog" set-up to a frames page since I decided that updating the menus on each "blog" page (the current one and the previous year "archives" ones) every time I made a new entry would be too much of a pain. Hopefully, it all checks out.

Friday, January 14, 2005

I haven't done a very good job of keeping this page up to date in terms of additions to the website. Today, I added an archive page to the "Comics Read Blog"* specially for the 2004 entries*. The plan at this time is to add a new archive page each year, keeping the main page for the current year's entries and moving the previous year's entries to the newly created archive page (2005, 2006, etc.).

[Note: Comics Blog is now a frames page (see February 5, 2005 "Updates" entry above for more details). The links in this entry above have therefore been removed. Use this link instead.]

Additional changes that I have made over the last few months (but neglected to mention here at the time) have been the addition of a mirror Books Read page sorted alphabetically by title, and a couple of alternate menus on the Star Trek Chronological Reading Project page, allowing you to search what's there by title and date entered (handy for knowing when was the last time I actually added something and what it was) as well as by the year the episode/novel/short story/etc. took place on the Star Trek calendar. (I believe I added the menus to the Star Trek page sometime in July 2004, and the alphabetical mirror book site around November 2004).

Added counters to pages. Not sure exactly how accurate they will be (for instance, I generate a lot of the "hits" myself when I go back to check out the changes I have just made). Also, I liked the look of the "Comics Read Blog"* page so much that I decided to adopt it for the Books Read page as well. I changed the format today and began adding "blog" style notes for most recently read books.

Saturday, May 15, 2004

Today added a "Comics Read Blog"* page. Like the Books Read page, the purpose of the blog is to let you know what comics I've been reading lately. I decided to do the comics differently however, so I'm trying a "blog" (weblog) style. I am interested in seeing how well it works out.

Well, I'm now settled in my new Georgia home.  It's wonderful here.  The scenery is beautiful.  After living my entire life in (flat) Florida, I love seeing mountains out my window and in the distance as I drive to and from work.  The weather has been wonderful (a cool breeze just about every day).   My house is out in the country.  Nice and quiet, and there's a pasture across the street that I can sit on my back porch and watch the horses, cows, and bulls graze in.   (And it's so nice and quiet!)  Truett-McConnell's campus is also quite beautiful.  I feel like I'm working at a church mountain top retreat everytime I go in to work.  (There's a very good "tour" of the campus on the school's website.  To see it, click on the school's name above.)

I mainly just wanted to sit down and add this entry today.  I've been in the new house since April 16, and started work May 2, so I felt that it was past time to report on my status.  On the website front, not much new to report except that I just added a new page.  Awhile back (between the March 30 note and this one), I added a list of recently read books to the homepage.  Not too long ago, I started doing this on my signature when writing to the message boards I frequent to let people know what I've been reading.  I added a similar list to my homepage.  Wanting to keep that list short (the five most recently read books), I added today a new page (linked to the list on the homepage) with a more complete list of books read.  I'm using 2004 as a starting date.  Since I keep a running list of what I've read on my home computer, I might add in previous year's books at a future time.

Big News!  It's official.  I'm Georgia bound.  (I've actually known this a few weeks now as I type this on March 30 but it's taken me some time to get around to writing this.)  Starting May 2 I will begin my new job as Evening Reference Librarian at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia.  This is a very exciting time for me and (while I'll miss my many friends in Arcadia) I'm anxious to get up there and get started.  A native Floridian, this will of course be a very large step for me, but I'm very much looking forward to it.  Moving day is April 15!

On a related note, I've made some slight modifications to the homepage: new location (Cleveland, Georgia), new previous location (Arcadia, Florida), new occupation/position (Truett-McConnell, evening reference librarian), made links to websites of organizations listed as possible, and rewrote the Hobbies and Interests section a bit.  (Oh, yeah, and I took off the DeSoto High mascot.  Might add it back some place at some future time.)

Friday, February 6, 2004

Today was my last day working as a media specialist at DeSoto County High School.  I enjoyed my (almost) six years at DHS (and am very grateful to them for agreeing to release me from the last four months of my contract), however I feel that it is time to move on.  Big changes are around the corner, and I will post them here as soon as they occur.  I do expect that my new job (I have a particular one in mind as I write this but would rather not put it in print until it's official) will require me to move, and out of Florida!  (Native Floridian here, 32 years!)  (Which reminds me, my last day here at DHS is one day before my 32nd birth day, February 7th.)

Outside of an occasional addition to my Star Trek Chronological Reading Project page, I haven't really done much work on the page (since the last batch of "Trooper" pictures in August).  I did stop by on on Tuesday to make one update to my homepage.  Under the heading of "Also Worth Noting" (under my work history), I can now put an ending date to my time as a volunteer music leader/choir director at my church.  Why?  Glory be, First Baptist Arcadia finally has a fulltime music and worship/youth pastor, Rev. Lee Walton.  While I have greatly enjoyed my two years leading music, after over three years of fill-ins it is wonderful that FBC Arcadia has a real music (and youth) minister.  With Brother Lee and Pastor Phil Young (no relation to me), I'm sure the Lord has a lot of exciting things in store for FBC.  (And in store for me as well.  Remember my comments of June 28 about a career change?  I feel that there may be another important update for me to post here not too far off from now.  Stay tuned!)  Also, added "Former Locations" to homepage (which might give you a hint as to my next update announcement).

Saturday, June 28, 2003

It's been awhile since my last update.  Several big things have happened since my last update over one year ago.  (1) In January, 2002, I began volunteering at my church, First Baptist Church of Arcadia, leading the music.  This includes leading the congregation in singing and directing the choir.  It has been a wonderful honor for me and I am thankful that God has opened this door for me and given me this opportunity to minister to others.  (I have always been involved in church music, singing in groups and/or playing the trombone, but I never dreamed that one day I'd be up in front of a congregation leading them in song!)  Since June, 2003, I have divided up the duties a bit with another person to make things a bit easier on both of us, but at this time I am still leading the choir (which sings in the morning services) and the music during the evening services.  I'm also playing the trombone again in the morning services, hoping to get a small orchestra going again soon. (2) I finished up my fifth year as a media specialist at DeSoto County High School in May, 2003.  For several months I felt that the time had come for me to move on and try to gain experience in another field.  I applied at a good number of public libraries both in Florida and out of state (my dream place right now is Washington D.C.; I just loved it there when I visited in July, 2002!), told everyone I was changing jobs and most likely moving, and actually submitted my resignation.  In May, however, I spoke with my Principal and decided to stay another year at DCHS.  I've enjoyed my time at DeSoto High (and living in Arcadia) and I'm looking forward to another year.  But we never know what the future might hold, so maybe when next year starts to roll around... (I'd really like to have the experience of working in a public library at some point in my career).  And finally, (3) just recently (Memorial Day weekend, 2003) "Trooper" [click link for pictures] came into my life (and nothing had been the same ever since).  I found Trooper huddled in the bushes one evening and just couldn't leave him to the wolves (well, ok, big dogs that frequent the neighborhood).  So that day, Trooper became a part of the family.  (Now, if I could just work on that other thing that's missing.  So far I haven't found her, but I'm sure she's out there!) :)

Man, has it really been two years since I visited these pages???  I guess so.  Anyway, I added my Star Trek Chronological Reading Project page to the site to bring people up to speed a bit on what I've been up to in my free time. Note: As I will be adding entries and updating information there regularly, I will date each additional entry there as opposed to making a notation on this page every time.

Added new "Work Related Photos" webpage. First picture displayed: the VFW's (Veterans of Foreign Wars) contribution of World War II reference books to the media center (picture in the DeSoto Sun Herald newspaper).

Saturday, September 30 - Sunday, October 1, 2000

Reformatted main homepage, "Golden Age Superman Index" webpage, and "Updates" webpage with new software, making it easier to update/adjust/reformat pages in the future. While doing so, I added a new (2000) picture of myself to the main homepage, and made some adjustments/corrections to the "Golden Age Superman Index" webpage.

Thursday, June 1, 2000

Made changes to the main homepage reflecting my move from Port Charlotte to Arcadia. Also added picture of DeSoto High School bulldog mascot and made some minor changes to "interests & hobbies" section (primarily deleting "collectible card games" since I haven't played one in two years). Also modified design some to hopefully make page more attractive and easier to read. Also made design changes on this "Updates" page.

Wednesday, September 29, 1999

Added photo of myself to the main webpage. Also changed it's layout some to accomodate the photo.

Sunday, August 22, 1999

Made minor corrections to the existing "Golden Age Superman Index" webpage. Finally added "Notes of the Pre-Crisis DC Universe" and "Sources for DC Indexes" webpages, both of which are currently accessible only via the "Golden Age Superman Index" page.

It has been a year since my last update due to problems with AOL (my "upgrading" from AOL 3.0 to AOL 4.0 prevents me from editing my old "Personal Publishers-2"-created webpages). I have transfered my existing webpages to new Geocities addresses in hopes of better luck in keeping webpages up-to-date and accessible.

At this time, I have already begun my second year as a Media Specialist at DeSoto County High School in Arcadia, Florida. I enjoyed a restful summer break, and I feel more confident going into my second year since I now feel like I know what I'm doing!

Sadly, I must report that the Brandon Comic Shoppe (click here to see website) closed its doors for the last time on July 15, 1999. Open since 1982, the shop (originally known as the Family Discount Book Center) will be missed in the Brandon area).

Note:
References are made below to circumstances and problems I had with my original websites on AOL, not with the ones currently on Geocities--DY, 8/21/99.]

Thursday, August 20, 1998

Hello,

Things have changed quite a bit since I last updated this website oh so many months ago. I started my new job as a media specialist at DeSoto County High School in August, 1998. That meant leaving Brandon behind (after 26 years, 10 of them while working at the comic shop--see the comic shop webpage for those changes) and moving to Port Charlotte, which is just south of Arcadia.

I apologize for the long lag in updates. One reason (excuse) was preparing for my move. Another one was that when I arrived in Port Charlotte, I realized that there were no AOL local access phone numbers down here, so that severely limited my internet time until I could find another way onto the 'net.

For those just arriving for the first time, my purpose for starting a webpage was threefold. First, I created it just for the experience of having one. It is amazing that this page may reach so many different people.

Second, I hoped to be able to offer information gleaned from my various hobbies and collections which fellow fans might find useful. I have very large collections of comic books, Star Trek and Star Wars materials, television shows on tape, etc. I hope to be able to offer information that is not necessarily available on all the other sites. For example, I don't intend to take the time to present another Star Trek episode guide since one can find such a guide on just about any other Trek site. I have ideas however for stuff I can include to placate the trekkers out there.

Third, this was to be the forum of the new and improved "Brandon Comic Shoppe" webpage. Unfortunately, since I am no longer working at the comic shop, this is no longer to be the case. The webpage will still be there, but it will most likely be a limited, unchanging info page (store hours, address, etc.) as opposed to all the up-to-date features I had originally planned (and never had the time to keep up with even when I worked there). To visit the comic shop website, just select Brandon Comic Shoppe Website.

Since I am limited in how much space I can have per webpage, I intend to link each new one to this main homepage. Again, I am new at this so it may take awhile for me to get the hang of it. Also, like most people, I do have a life (at least I hope so). That means I may not be able to devote as much time to this new project as some people (particularly now that I have a real, full-time, job for the first time in my life!).

Thanks for visiting,

David Young
